The Evils of Capitalism

If you ever want
to understand
the evils of Capitalism,
Don’t read Marx’s Das Kapital,
leave the books
and the libraries
behind.

look instead into the soul
of a child
forced to labor.

look at his scarred,
grease lined hands,
shoulders hunched
like a stooping, bent tree
in his aged, weary
childish frame.

and if you still don’t understand
the evils of Capitalism
look at his tired, dirt covered
frayed clothes,
his shabby, warn out shoes
dragging
as if to protest
their very
mutual
miserable
existence.

and if you still don’t understand
the evils of Capitalism
look at the fading
frayed spirit of his eyes
-like a wilting sunflower,
like a fading, once dazzling summer,
whose colors leak out
of the frames of his hunched existence-
more visible than his scarred,
grease lined hands,
more visible than his dusty, dirt covered
frayed clothes.

And look too
to the fully grown
adults
passing by
as if such a travesty,
such a sight
is as natural
as the ache
that has already settled
into the joints
of their wilting frames.

and then imagine
serpentine Capitalism
living, feeding, leeching
on the marrow
of these children.

and then tell me
you still don’t understand
the evils of
Capitalism.
