There was a time
I ran from you
preferring the airless deluge
of the margins of diaspora
as if trying to lose
a paper thin identity
that I didn’t know was
millennia pages long.

But now
Like the moon
moored adrift at sea,
Like the waves
belong to the majestic sea,
Like the sand grains
rival the sun to please the ocean,
I return to you
The land of blood and love,
Of ancient folklore
and tattooed, almond eyed beauties,
The land of mountains and fire
Of blood red pomegranates
and honeyed fig trees,
Of revolutionaries
and freedom fighters,
The land of Kawa
and Gilgamesh and Innana,
To the land of betrayal, and envy
and scorched earth.

But now
just as the sun always rises
and shines its nourishing light devotedly,
Just as the birds always take flight
into the canyons and caverns of freedom,
Like the beat always returns to the heart,
And the blood travels the entire universe
only to return to its center,
I return to you,
The heart of my heart,
The father of my father,
The sheherzad
of my one thousand and one nights,
My mother,

Dr. Hawzhin Azeez
